What is the Literacy Cafe?

It is a literacy program that helps to create independent learners in reading, writing, listening and all literacy tasks.

Each day the student participates in a variety of mini lessons teaching literacy strategies followed by practice in using these specific strategies.

Students work in five areas of 2nd grade literacy 

that we have titled the Daily 5:

     1. Read to self

     2. Word Work

            3. Read to Someone

           4. Listen to Reading

           5. Work on Writing

So far we are only working with Read to Self, Word Work

and Work on Writing. But with practice and after we build our

stamina in these three areas, we will add the other two rounds.

The reason it is called a Cafe is because the strategies focus on

4 main elements of literacy:

1. Comprehension

2. Accuracy

3. Fluency

4. Expanded Vocabulary
